Selling out is a harsh term in many’s books, but putting ads on a website previously void of ads is, quite accurately, “selling out”. This is something I wanted to avoid for purposes of brand image but have recently realized it’s genuine benefit.
I’ve spent a fair amount of time designing, building, testing, and improving Archonic.com and I will continue to update and improve it as long as the brand is alive. This is work that does not yield income. You could argue that the time spent on Archonic.com indirectly yields income by landing clients. I would agree, however no one could argue that such work directly benefits paying clients. This means I’m either working for free or taking income from other projects. I don’t like doing either.
The solution is simple – have Archonic.com pay for itself. BuySellAds.com is a young ad manager (their 2nd birthday is today – happy birthday!) which focuses exclusively on niche design sites. Current clients of BuySellAds.com include FreshBooks, MailChimp, Abduzeedo, Tuts+ Network, Yoast and a good number more. I can’t think of a more applicable ad manager for Archonic. Once readership is at an appropriate level, BuySellAds will be filling places off home and client related pages. Until that time, you may see ads from the Envato network, WooThemes and others. Don’t worry, no Google ads. Scouts honor.
