Well here it is. A brand new Ottawa based digital interactive agency is born! This has been a goal of mine for a surprisingly short time. Most of my dreams require large start up funds, knowledge I’m far from attaining or the absence of one or more laws of physics. Thankfully all that is needed for Archonic is ambition. That, I have plenty of.
A quick search for competing local firms reveals at least 25 other worthy companies (and many more unworthy). So why on Earth would I decide to start yet another Ottawa tech company in the heart of a disheartening recession?
What recession? The current world economic state is nothing to shrug off, yet in terms of a whether someone should start a new company, it certainly shouldn’t serve as any kind of deterrent. To me, a ”recession” is a state of mind that causes people and companies alike to clam up financially, only resulting in more economic damage. It’s a state of mind I lack.
The success of a new business is reliant on many variables, the vast majority of which boil down to ambition. The first step to failure is doubt just as the first step to success is certainty. This is where you’d expect some kind of motivational poster or quote of someone famous and long dead. I’ll pass on that and instead tell a short story about the head of a company based entirely on ambition.
Being a door-to-door sales person is a rough way to pay the bills. I’m thoroughly familiar with it and thoroughly happy I no longer need it. The head of Spring Masters Canada is a world champion fighter named Ben Stewart. In a semi final match at a worldwide competition, Ben tore his adductor longus. Without the means to kick, Ben had lost his greatest fighting asset. Instead of dropping out of the competition, as I imagine most would do in his situation, he chose to face a world champion fighter in the final fight without the ability that had taken him so far. He did this because he was certain of himself.
When the match began, Mr. Stewart marched up to his opponent and punched him in the face. He continued to punch him in the face till he went down. Round after round of face punching, Ben emerged victorious without a single hit landed upon him by what was now the world’s 2nd greatest fighter in his division.
A start-up company in these times should not decide to drop out of the competition. They should simply punch the competition in the face make decisions for success differently. All it takes is certainty.
